Monograph on the architect Thorvald Bindesbøll (1846–1908). Thorvald Bindesbøll is primarily known as an artist-maker and the creator of beautiful ceramic vessels and silverware, but throughout his life he also designed buildings, with more projects and completed buildings to his name than one might expect. To reflect this achievement, the book examines his architecture, which is viewed as the underlying basis of his sure grasp of form. A persistent aspect of Bindesbøll’s oevre is his emphasis on function and the clear structure of plans and his priority of form over variation and decoration. Among the buildings that have earned a distinctive place in Danish architectural history are Fiskepakhusene in Skagen, Strandridergaarden on Strandvejen and Bombebøssen in Copenhagen’s Christianshavn district.
Lavishly illustrated with new photos and many previously unpublished drawings.
The book is also available in an English language edition "Thorvald Bindesbøll - Inventing Modernity".
