BYHUSET is a comprehensive book about renovating and altering urban houses and apartments in a way that respects the original architecture of the building and its use of materials — written by arguably the country’s foremost expert in the field. The book is relevant to anyone living in an apartment building, terraced house, villa or detached house in one of Denmark’s major cities, suburbs or provincial towns.

The population of Denmark’s cities is growing rapidly, and it is particularly the historic city centres that are attracting Danes. The book provides an engaging overview of the development of both the city and the urban house, from the earliest times to the present day, including architectural styles and materials. There are also chapters on the different types of housing, their background, characteristics and interior design.

Last but not least, the book offers practical advice and guidance on renovation, alteration, building conservation and reinstatement. The various elements of a building — such as roofs, façades, doors, windows and staircases — are examined systematically.

Featuring beautiful photographs by Stuart McIntyre.

SØREN VADSTRUP qualified as an architect specialising in building conservation in 1978. He was head of the Raadvad Centre from 1989 to 2002 and, since 2006, has worked as a researcher, lecturer and communicator at the Centre for Building Conservation in Raadvad.

Since 2011, he has also been a research associate professor at the Royal Danish Academy – School of Architecture in Copenhagen. In 2004, he published the book Huse med sjæl (Huse med sjæl ).

In 2001, Søren Vadstrup and his family purchased and restored a listed four-winged half-timbered farmstead in Viby on the island of Funen. Alongside this work, he has spent many years, among other things, documenting and restoring historic buildings in Greenland, Iceland and the Faroe Islands.
