What is the meaning of detailing in today’s building industry? Has the need for thoroughly designed and refined details made for specific projects faded? When everything is becoming more digitally dependent, globally available and delivered in no time – will future architects only have to configure simplified ready-made components that are disconnected from local cultures? Or are we facing a digital driven redevelopment of craftsmanship that will reinvent custom made architectural details? Do the details of today serve the needs of tomorrow? Please reflect over these questions, they are addressing reality – they are now!

The book presents the condensed version of lectures presented at the international symposium “The Detail is dead, long live the detail” held at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts School of Architecture in May 2017. For this we have tried to extract some of the most important points and examples in order to emphasize the different positions and how details in architecture are understood and framed by formal matters and institutions.
