New demands for sustainable solutions and an increased industrialisation and thus streamlining of the building processes are some of the most important challenges the current Danish construction industry is facing. How these challenges can sustain the creation of holistic architectural solutions is the starting point of this book.It focuses on why the lifespan of the building must be an integrated part of the design, including a definition of architectural sustainability as not only linked to the physical and technical dimensions of the structure, but also to the use and habitation of the space over time.
The book presents a number of case studies of well-known buildings exploring this field of questions. The analyses are divided into two series of case studies.
The first series of case studies is a historical revisit to a number of visionary housing projects from the first wave of industrialisation (1960 – 1970). Here we explore the lessons from history and how we can avoid repeating the same mistakes.
The second series of cases studies is based on an analytic tool introducing a new perspective on current industrialised housing. The tool generates a mapping of the potentials embedded in the structure of the building and is meant to evoke a discussion of these potentials in relation to present and future demands.Through the analysis of recent housing projects (2004 – 2010), the usability of the analytic tool is explored and the potentials and restrictions of different ways of building are being discussed, focusing both on the construction phase and the future use of the building.
The inquiries in this book expose a number of fundamental problems in relation to current building processes and building products. In this way, some of the essential challenges of building sustainable, now and in the future, are identified.
The book is aimed at both architects and other professionals interested in a sustainable development of future industrialised building systems, particularly within housing projects. DANISH LANGUAGE EDITION
